Spin Learning Boxes
In collaboration with Spectrum Space
Distance Learning Programme
Who is it for?
Spin Learning is delighted to be collaborating with Spectrum Space to provide personalised learning activities to students who are not currently accessing a formal educational setting.
The programme is particularly suitable for autistic students who have a PDA profile.
What is it?
The Spin Learning Boxes distance learning programme takes the form of exciting and bespoke boxes of practical activities that are sent to the student's home every week. The boxes contain educational games and resources, along with instructions on how to deliver the activities. There is an emphasis on making connections with the student's "spins" or special interests, in order to promote engagement.
Who can deliver the programme?
Parents may choose to deliver the learning themselves, or employ personal assistants to deliver the learning for them. Some students may prefer to access the activities independently.
What are the basic principles?
PDA friendly practice underpins the programme
Everything in the box is optional
The activities are a match between the student's next step targets and their interests
As such, the boxes are bespoke for each student
Progress is measured with photos and comments from the students themselves or their parents/support assistants. We don't "mark" work and tell students they got "5 out of 10", for example
Anyone can support the students in accessing and completing the activities but they are designed and planned by a qualified teacher.
Students can complete the activities in their own time and whenever they want, they don't have to stick to "school hours"
Each student is an individual and this programme is as flexible as is humanly possible to reflect that!
How are the activities chosen?
The activities provided in the Spin Learning Boxes are based on the Spectrum Space curriculum devised by Clare Truman. Clare is a highly qualified teacher and education consultant who specialises in supporting PDA children and young people to access education.
The curriculum is based around the Functional Skills Curriculum for English, Maths and ICT, the student's next steps in learning, and, most importantly, the interests of the student.
Spin Learning is thrilled to be collaborating with Clare to enable more children to take advantage of this highly successful distance learning programme.

How much does it cost?
The Spin Learning Boxes service costs approximately £12,000-£13,000 per year. This is usually paid for by the Local Authority via a Personal Budget or an EOTAS/EOTIS arrangement (Education Other Than At/In School). Private arrangements are also possible.
The cost is based on 39 weeks of provision, with approximately 10 hours of learning activities provided in each weekly box. (Fewer hours of provision per week can be negotiated.)
Spin Learning Boxes works principally with the Local Authorities of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Herefordshire, although other areas may be possible.
